Working in Australia – Learn all about applying for Australian Visa

The various Australian Visas

  • Skilled migration visa is specifically for skilled foreign workers who meet the required criteria for the Australian labour market

  • Nominated or the sponsored work visas where an individual need to be nominated by either by a recognised Australian employer, a territory/state authority or a government agency.

Requirements to work in Australia

There are specific requirements of working in Australia that you must abide by depending on the nature of the occupation and the employer. But the general requirements that are necessary to work in Australia and the aiding of the visa process are as follows,

  • English language efficiency and proficiency by providing the relevant certification, IELTS score or the likes will do perfectly.

  • The designated and nominated occupation must be listed on the relevant Skilled Occupation List (SOL).

  • The presence of the required skill and the experience for the job you are applying through nomination.

  • The proof of the skills is subject to a stringent assessment by Australian officials.

  • The applicant must meet the health and the character criteria along with a police check.

Applying for the visa

Skilled visa

First and foremost, you need to submit the online EOI (Expression of Interest) on the SkillSelect which is an online system. Based on your ratings with respect to the age, skills, education, language proficiency and other parameters you profile might get selected and nominated by the Australian state, territory or an employer.

Sponsored visas

For the sponsored visa, as the name states, you must be sponsored by a business in Australia. The employer needs to be an approved sponsor, and he needs to fulfil specific criteria as well. You can lodge an online application for this visa by mentioning the nomination TRN or the Transaction Reference Number or the Application ID confirmed by the employer in Australia.

Common Skilled Migration Visa Categories

  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)

  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)

  • Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489)

Common sponsored or nominated visa categories

  • Temporary work (skilled) visa (subclass 457)

  • Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 187)
  • Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186)
