February 26, 2018 by Shlok Arya Leave a Comment

Aman was in his class sitting quietly and staring at the window lost in his own world. Suddenly a chalk hit his head, and he suddenly looks at the teacher.

The teacher made a sly comment and said his to concentrate in class.

After class he went to the playground and sat on the swing trying to make up his mind in order to make a decision regarding the acceptance of the problem.

Aman reached home in the afternoon, he went straight to his room to change clothes. Aman stayed in his room for a couple of minutes still trying to make up his mind regarding the acceptance.

He then thought of first telling his parents to get clarity, and so he called his parents in his room and said: “Mom Dad I went for a psychiatric evaluation, and they believe I suffer from Anxiety disorder, and they sent me to have sessions with them, I believe….”

His sentence was interjected by his father who said “what do you mean by psychiatric evaluation? You mean you are crazy? What nonsense is all this, just want to waste time, isn’t it? Just go and concentrate on your education.

Aman was startled to see his father’s reaction, he then looked at his mom who just went back to her work, Aman again tried to make them understand the severity of his problem but it was all in vain.

Aman with his sad face and angry face went to his room and sat there for the rest of the day and thought about his problem.

Psychiatric doctor

Next morning Aman went to his school and quietly sat on the last bench of the class. He attentively listens to teachers’ explanation on various topic of a different subject.

He knew that today he has an appointment with his psychiatrist and this made him very impatient in the class.

With every passing class, his eagerness to move out of the class was also increasing and the teacher did notice Aman’s behaviour.

Some glanced at him and chose to ignore and so stopped and asked about his behaviour.

As soon as the class was over, Aman ran towards the school gate and took an autorickshaw towards MG road. Aman went to Dr Kashyap clinic.

Aman knocked on the door and waited for the responses. Dr Kashyap allowed Aman to enter. As Aman entered he greeted Dr. Kashyap and took a seat opposite to him and said “I again had a fight with my parents, they don’t believe that I suffer from social anxiety.

They think I am making some excuse to get away from school. I seriously don’t know how to make them believe” Dr. Kashyap replied “don’t try so hard to make them believe that you suffer from a problem, this will make you distress and will create more problem for you.

Try to calm yourself down and think about ways in which you communicate with the group and please take the med” After Aman session got over he left the clinic.

Home

Aman was sitting on his bed with a laptop and was playing FIFA. Aman was cussing the players every time he loses a score and suddenly he heard the shouting, “Aman! Aman! Where the hell are you? Aman!”

Aman went running to the living room, where he saw his medicine in his dad’s hand. Dad “what is this? I am asking what this is.”

Aman was startled to see the medicine in his dad’s hand, he didn’t know what to say or how to react, and so he just said yes.

His dad then asked what the purpose of the medicine to which Aman replied it is for my social anxiety disorder.

Aman’s father got very angry and said “you went behind my back and consulted a doctor and you not for once thought to tell us about your decision and you went on taking this medicine.

What do you think you got some problem?

That you suffer from what talking to people wait seriously, just because you find hard time in talking with people you assumed and your doctor analysed that you went crazy and this game of patient and doctor you are now burning my money”.

Aman retaliated and said my problem is genuine, it needs to be treated and if it’s not taken care of now than it will become big in the future, why don’t you understand?

I never involved you because you never understand and you think that I am just making some excuse to bunk my college but please believe me I have a problem it’s just that it’s not cancer but social anxiety.

Aman’s father said “you just think you have a problem, the amount of time you spend in thinking about the problem is actually affecting your education and you know what that is the real problem, so just go to your room and study and remember this discussion is over, and I am not going to listen anything on it further.”

Aman went to his room and started throwing things on the ground and burst into tears.

Aman kept crying and thought about his future where he still be dealing with this problem and then also no one will understand his problem.

School

Aman while going to his class room saw a brochure regarding psychological fest. He after the class asked his teacher about the fest to which his teacher told “this is to make people aware regarding the psychological problems and how people suffer from it”.

Aman was happy with the initiative but thought about how he could bring his parents in this fest because this is the last way to make his parents understand about this problem.

So, he suggested his teacher to send letter to each parent and invite them in this fest.

The bright sky

Aman went to the school early and helped his teacher in setting up the seminar hall and arranging seats. After 3 hours parents started turning up, and they started sitting in their appointed place.

Dr. Kashyap also came but as a chief guest, he sat on the chair placed on the seat. The session started and the principal addressed the parents regarding the problem and how it’s not a shame if one is suffering from it.

Aman was praying to god that his parents turn up for the event, but he also knew that they won’t understand.

After 40 minutes of principal speech Dr. Kashyap came on the podium and exactly at that moment Aman couldn’t believe that his parents were standing at the gate, and they turned up for the event.

As soon as the principal saw Aman’s parent she came down and welcomed his parents and requested them to take a seat. Dr. Kashyap while explaining the psychological problem told about a boy who suffers for social anxiety and how he overcome his problem.

Listening to Dr’s word Aman moved to tears, and he left the auditorium.

After 3 hours the session was concluded, Dr. Kashyap saw Aman’s parents and made them understand the severity of the problem and how they need to help Aman in his fight because he is fighting alone, and he is getting tired too. Aman parents were ashamed with themselves and accepted their mistake. Aman with their parents went home.

5 years

Aman now got many friends, and he finds it easy to address an audience, but he still regularly visit his doctor with his parents.

His parents now make other parents understand the complexity of Psychological problem. Aman and his family after many years laughed together and love spending time with each other.
