What is it that makes us different from our ancestors and the animals? It is our will to be clean and hygienic.
Our effort to identify and remove dirt from our immediate surroundings is what makes us different from animals who litter anywhere they can and have no idea about waste disposal, segregation, or management.
This is particularly what I am going to speak about today. A very good morning to everyone present here. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is on what you are going to be listening to from me today.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is also called as the clean India mission or Swachh Bharat campaign and is a national level campaign run by the Indian government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Swachh Bharat mission, which is the campaign to clean India on 2nd of October 2014 on the anniversary of the birth of the father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi.
As per the mission, the central government has pledged to spend nearly rupees 2 lakh crore in a five-year time as a part of the ambitious plan to completely clean India by October 2019.
The mission will be launched simultaneously in all the 650000 villages of the country.
Not only this, in an effort to promote the Swachh Bharat mission, The Central Board of Secondary Education has asked schools to authorize and organized competitions of essays, paintings, debates, song, skits, plays, etc. for the promotion of cleanliness and hygiene.
Also, this noble initiative has received support from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation as well as the social joined Facebook who are likely to partner with the government on this mission.
As of now however, Jammu and Kashmir has been exempted from the mission because of the volatile law and order situation there.
As per the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, government officials have to come to office on October 2nd so that they can take a cleanliness oath formulated by the Cabinet Secretariat.
Clean India was a dream scene by Mahatma Gandhi regarding which he said that “sanitation is more important than independence.”
This mission has targeted to solve the sensation problems as well as better waste management all over India by creating sanitation facilities to all.
In the past, many awareness programs such as the total sanitation campaign, the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, etc. were launched by the Indian government about the environmental sanitation and personal cleanliness, however, those could not be so effective to make India a clean India.
The main objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are
- Removing the trend of open defecation.
- Changing sanitary toilets into flush toilets.
- Removing of manual scavenging.
- Proper disposal of solid in liquid and their segregation and subsequent treatment.
- To bring behavioral changes among the people about cleanliness and sanitation.
- To enhance awareness about sanitation.
- Facilitate the participation of private sectors towards cleanliness facilities.
The prime minister has nominated the names of 9 personalities of India to initiate the campaign in their own areas.
These 9 personalities are
- Salman Khan
- Anil Ambani
- Kamal Hassan
- Priyanka Chopra
- Kapil Sharma
- Baba Ramdev
- Sachin Tendulkar
- Shashi Tharoor
And the cast and crew team of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.
The prime minister in his address has also requested that every Indian should take this campaign as a challenge and try their best to make this campaign a successful and fruitful one.
The chain of 9 peoples is like branching of the tree. These 9 people will be nominating 9 more people of their own and so on everyone will be engaged in the process of cleaning this wonderful country of ours.
Narendra Modi ji has also requested common people to be involved in this event and upload the videos or images of cleanliness over Internet or on various social media websites like Facebook, Twitter etc. so that other people may get promoted and motivated to do the same in their own area which is the only way that we can get a clean country.
In order to continue and make this campaign a successful one, The Ministry of Finance of the Government of India has started a program name Swachh Bharat Cess.
This is a tax which will be going to the funds that are to be utilized for the process of cleaning the country. This is a form of indirect tax and accounts to about 0.5% more after total service tax.
And notable mention here is the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Aditya Nath, who has started a cleanliness drive as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2017 in the state of Uttar Pradesh to ensure cleanliness in the official buildings.
As per this program, he has banned eating betel leaf, tobacco, and such other products in government offices so that the people does not create dirty stains on the walls and various public places.
