Essay on Does Social Media Create Isolation?

February 9, 2018 by Vicky Sharma Leave a Comment

Change is a very subjective process. It differs from person to person according to the difference in their perspective towards life and living. Life, as a whole, revolves around its temporarily; the constant change that sets it within certain limits of functioning.

It has forever been mankind’s aim as an effort to manipulate and push these boundaries. With this goal in hand, we see leaps and strides in man’s achievement throughout history.

The evolution and advancement that came through the ages in the fields of industry and technology is nothing less than laudable. We can see this rapid advancement in every field with the revolution of the industry and technology.

Although we are able to openly appreciate these major achievements of man and his acumen, like any other variable that exist in the world, we see that it comes with its own set of negative attributes.

Even the most positive changes come with its cons that, in some ways, hinders the process. The fact remains that the change will be considered ideal if the pros outweigh the cons.

Technology and social media

Technology has evolved in leaps and bounds in the last few decades. From the basic devices of the television and the telephone a few decades ago to the evolution to flat screens and smartphones says a lot about the advancement and sophistication we have reached.

Lifestyle became a lot more expensive and people went through life at a very rapid trajectory. The change in the lifestyle also resulted in the change in the mindset of every person.

The evolvement of the need of the basic requirements to tech savvy devices which, arguably, we cannot live without in this present age has led to raising the bar for our expenditure and daily commodities.

With this evolution in technology came a revolution in social media as well where it became much easier to stay connected with someone if one had a decent internet connection and an electronic device to use the internet with.

Social media has evolved from the basic means of text-based communication to various high-ended means like video chatting and photo cluster social media like Instagram and Pinterest.

We see that these come by popular demand of the masses as a means of staying in connection with people. It further evolved from this starting aim to a more complex algorithm where the line between connection and narcissism seems to disappear and people started exploiting social media to show off their every-day trivialities which would otherwise have been insignificant.

Going through a rapid change would only lead to this eventual corruption of an asset and this was the result of what happened from using social media.

The cons of using such social media and technology surfaced. This can never be entirely blamed on man in general because it is an unavoidable side effect of progress. There will absolutely be casualties in the progress towards something, and we are paying it.

We are paying it with our conscience and morality.  A second wave of desensitization hit us with the progressive use of social media. The irony lying in the fact that social media, which was supposed to connect people and make us closer only resulted in further detachment and drifting apart.

It has reached to such an extend now that a lot of people are attributing mental disorders such as depression, panic attacks and stress from excessive use of social media. Technology, with its negative associations, is now serving as a major reason to the instability in the society.

Isolation from using social media

Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Myspace and Pinterest has taken the internet by storm with its popularity in demand and usage.

It is a medium to stay connected with friends, families and acquaintances developing a virtual bond by sharing one’s likes, interests and hobbies, having discussions and voicing opinions on contrasting topics. The platform was designed to act as a means of communication and to know each other better.

Ironically, it took a turn for the worse where one is left more isolated, unappreciated and inadequate. There is this implied virtual race against one another as to trump one another in terms of stature, social mobility and the general lively activities of the day-to-day experience.

People are so caught up with the urge to find out what other people are up to and what they are pursuing at the moment; how to surpass them or engage in similar activities to live their apparently unhappening life.

This misconception that has gripped the masses with a tight hook has left the general population to live in a fugue state of constant comparison and denigration of oneself making it easier to fall into stress and depression. This malicious ritual has left a very noticeable mark on the mankind.

People are so infused with the idea of isolation of oneself behind the blue screen that a lot of people are developing extreme cases of trust issues and demoralization. The isolation can only lead to further gruesome implications to the human psyche.

It is said that monsters are born inside the lonely mind. Hence, it is imperative that there should be remedial measures to be improvised and executed with utmost urgency and care so as to deter this rapid progress of mental disorders all bearing from the exploitation of social media; yet another sign of the power of human corruption.
