Good morning to one and all present here and greetings for the day. Today I am going to put forward my ideas on the topic ‘the recess should be longer’ and I hope your co-operation throughout the time that I am presenting my speech.
Schooldays are fun. School time is the time when one enjoys the simple joys of life. There is not much burden, not many worries about life. Hence a school life is the best time that one can have in his/her lifetime.
An entire school schedule is divided into different segments. Every segment has equal amount of time allotted to it. Every segment is dedicated to a different subject of study. Between this monotonous study schedule there comes a word which adds interest to the entire schedule.
This word is ‘recess’. It is the time allotted to the students to have some break from their studies and chill-out, to have their Tiffin and complete their needs. This is the functional utility of a recess, but for students it is something more than just this.
Recess is the time when students can enjoy the company of their friends. Usually during the class hours it gets impossible to talk to your friends. Only you can talk to the friend sitting adjoining to you. Recess is the time you can actually get up from your seat walk over to the friend you want to talk to and have a hearty chat with him/her
Recess is also the time when you can meet the students from other sections or other classes, be it a junior or a senior. You can walk into the classroom of your best friend and have a good chat with h\him/her.
Recess can also be a time for spending with oneself. There are a few students who like to be isolated. They like to spend time to themselves. Recess it the time when they can get a few seconds for self reflection.
Recess is the time when you treat yourself with the tasty food that your mother has packed for you in your Tiffin. But never open your Tiffin box in front of your friends…yes you got me right. Your food won’t stay in your Tiffin box. It will simply vanish. All your hungry friends will be chomping away your food. This is a very common experience of school life. I can relate because I was also a victim, not once or twice but numerous times.
Recess is the appropriate time to spread rumours. Something happens in a class. Recess is the time that such news spreads to other classrooms. Children actively take part in murmuring into the ears of their friends.
Recess is gala- time for geeks. It is at this time that the geeks sit down to solve the sums in which they got stuck during the class hours. In some cases there are a group of geeks. They sit down like a panel and discuss the topics or problems that they did not understand when the teacher was teaching. There will always be a teacher type friend in such groups. He is the one who has understood all the problems and he will be held responsible for explaining to others the topics.
So we see how recess is important during the school hours for the children. We can easily understand their need in school curriculum.
Nowadays in some schools the management is reducing the time devoted to recess and extra-curricular activities, to make students go through studies the maximum. But they are not able to realize what they are actually required to do.
Hence, I believe the recess time should be longer. Some schools have kept the altogether recess time same, but they have borrowed some part of the recess time to put in between short breaks of ten minutes. Hence the recess time have reduced but altogether the time allotted for break remains the same.
But I personally feel students should be given more time to enjoy themselves, to take the fun of the school life that they are in. Would you like it if someone cut down on your break time that you enjoy in office? Then how can you expect students to be fine with their strict timings and schedule. Just because they are kids we are letting this happen to them?
Hence, I conclude by saying that break times are times of merriment. They should be increased to provide those innocent faces some time to indulge in childish pleasures. There will be time when life will pressurize them like it did with us. Hence we should let them enjoy their childhood so long as time is there in their hands. Only we (those who have passed that time) will understand how valuable those days were.
