Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a great social reformer of India. He was born on 22nd May, 1772 in a Brahmin family in Bengal. His knowledge of many languages like Bengali, Sanskrit, Urdu, English, Arabic, Latin, French and Persian was quite deep.
He was a great scholar and had studied the Upanishads and him? Holy Quran in great depth. Raja Ram Mohan Roy had become an employee of the East India Company for ten years, from 1805 to 1815.
After leaving his job, he spent the rest of his life serving the people of his country. Raja Ram worked very hard for improving the conditions of the people of India. He did a pioneering work in social, educational and religious field.
He worked hard to get the society rid of social evils. Raja founded the Brahmo Samaj to fight for the rights of women. He wanted Hindu religion to be free from all its evils.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy fought hard against the practice of “SATI” and the child marriage. In Satio practice, the wife was forced to burn herself at the funeral pyre of her dead husband.
He encouraged the people of Bengal to raise their voice against both these evil practices. The relief came when Lord William Bentinck. The then Governor General of India, declared Sati illegal in 1829.
This great social reformist and the leader died on 27th September, 1833. He is always remembered for his social work, especially for the cause of the upliftment of Indian women
