All the top notch officials of the country are appointed by the president of India. The executive machinery of the country lies in the hands of the President. Big decisions for the country are decided and fabricated by the prime minister of the country.
Whether to implement them or not lies in the hands of the executive machinery. The presidential power in our nation is quite different from that of the presidential power in the US. In the US, the president himself decides on the implementation of big decisions for the nation.
Here, the prime minister makes the decisions and then consults the president before bringing it into implementation. So the powers of overseeing the big decisions lie in the hands of the president.
Eligibility
To be elected as president of India, one needs to be a citizen of India, should have attained the age of 35 years, should be eligible to be appointed to the Lok Sabha and should not be holding any post as Member of Parliament. The president of India is the supreme commander of the defence forces of India.
He appoints the Prime Minister of India, in that, he calls the person holding the majority of vote share after the election of the prime minister and the ministers of the cabinet. The president of India is also responsible for appointing the chief justice of India.
Selection of various posts
The election commissioner of the country is responsible for conducting free and fair elections in the country. He oversees matters regarding conducting elections, preparing ballot papers, correct distribution, ensuring transparency, candidature, and disputes related to election candidatures, etc, all matters related to election handling discrepancies etc.
So, the president appoints the most eligible election commissioner of the nation.
Election for the President
The president of India is also appointed through an electoral college consisting of members from both houses ensuring free and fair election to the post of the president.
When a person files his candidature for the president’s post, his nomination is accepted after thorough checking of his credentials and then an election is conducted.
A smooth process is ensured for the same and it is also kept in mind that the minorities get a fair chance to cast their vote in the process of election.
A Highly Distinguished Position
The president also holds the dignified post for appointing the attorney general of India. Lot of research and paper work go in before actually deciding on the right candidate for these posts as the president has to be accountable to the whole nation when it comes to electing dignitaries.
Not only do they represent India on international forums, but their position and caliber accounts for the whole country and hence the president has to be very selective in terms of selecting the right candidature for these posts.
He is also responsible for appointing the governors of the states and also the UPSC chairman and all the members of the UPSC. The UPSC conducts free and fair examinations every year for enrolling candidates for its various services.
The exam is a most sought exam among the candidates of India as it is the most toughest to crack in the country and many prosperous candidate eyeing for the civil services put in their hardcore efforts to achieve the same.
Such is the magnitude and power of the high positions in the country and hence the selection of the most appropriate candidate rests in the hands of the president.
The governors of the states are decided by the President based on individual candidate research and followed by recommendations by expert panels and discussions by various heads holding high portfolios. Apart from this, the President also looks after the administration and rule in all the union territories of India.
Just like in other states, that are controlled by their individual chief ministers of the state, the union territories come under the guided leadership of the president.
The supremacy of the chief minister decides the flow of actions within a state; this power rests with the president in terms of union territories. Any plan of action or implementation takes place in his name and it is final and binding.
Other Powers
The president can also exercise his judicial powers to decide on very important and significant issues of the country. In times of emergency, he can issue ordinances and implementation orders for taking the law and order of the country in his hands and deciding on the further steps by keeping the welfare of the country and its citizens in particular view.
Dr. B. Rajendra Prasad was the first president of Independent India. He holds the achievement for getting elected twice for the post of the president, an unbeatable record that he has set for the country.
He was a very humble president and under his able leadership, the country saw many reforms and changes in political and socio-economic scenarios of the country.
The current president of our country is Shri. Ramnath Kovind and he is working to set new standards for our country in matters of technology, development and bridging the gap between rural and urban India.
Conclusion
Today, we can find many youngsters running away and not preferring government jobs for the mere reason of reservations of jobs, unavailability of seats for particular communities, hands of corruption and play of politics in many big circles.
The power and control of the nation would go into the wrong hands, if we do not let educated and eligible, knowledgeable youth to enter active politics and control the administrative systems of the county. Government should make way for jobs and increase the employability quotient of the country.
The country is suffering from a large set back where in all the cream of talent goes into lucrative IT jobs overseas and the middle and the lower categories find a way to somehow creep into the left over jobs, but usually end up with dissatisfaction.
Reforms and active concerns regarding changes in the country have to be brought in to change the scene of government jobs in the country. The country would walk on the path of development and begin a new revolution in jobs and employability if each of us realize our strengths and work towards creating a sustainable society, both for the youth and the unemployed lot.
The road to prosperity starts from our home itself if each of us is able to produce one leader from each home and urge them to become torch bearers of tomorrow. If we look at the various presidents of the past, we see that all of them were very highly knowledgeable and educated.
Education played and shall play a very big role in creating knowledge and delivering it into the right hands and for the right purposes in one’s future. We have to seek good education and utilize the knowledge thus gained for the right intentions and the right purposes.
We have to be updated about the latest technology in use and use our minds to work in partnership with the government by lending a hand in various citizen initiative schemes.
We can work closely with the government and ask them to improve facilities for the society by writing to them about our concerns and make sure that they are properly addressed. For that, we need able leaders who can bring about change and that transformation is possible only by taking suitable initiatives.
