I joined a new school in Grade 6 when we moved to stay in a new locality. The change in the neighbourhood was taxing; however, it was the new school premises that created an overwhelming sense of fear in me. I knew that I would eventually blend into the crowd, but I was certain that the initial days were not going to be the most memorable.
It was my first day at Vibgyor High School and I truly felt like a fish out of water. While I scanned the school campus I could see that this place was more clean and organised than my previous school. Phew, this certainly made me feel better at the thought of using the girl’s restroom!
As I walked towards my new classroom, I could not help but wonder if I would get a cozy seat towards the back of the room. I have always been an introvert and preferred staying away from the limelight, i.e., the front bench.
When I entered the room, I could feel the inexplicable energy of at least thirty pairs of eyes staring at me. I slowly moved towards the middle of the room where I spotted one of the few empty seats and parked myself there. I didn’t look up to meet and greet my new classmates, as everything felt too awkward.
It was then that I saw her entering the room. She had a calm face, her hair was pulled into a tight ponytail, and she came towards me with a confident look. I wished that she would not initiate a conversation and stopped making eye contact. However, she introduced herself as Meera and asked if she could take the seat beside me. I didn’t have a choice but to agree.
The warmth in Meera’s smile and the beauty of her thoughts were evident as soon as she started speaking to me. I immediately sensed that she is someone I would want to befriend.
After completing a year at Vibgyor High, I am now thankful that there was an empty seat next to me on my first day at school, as that was what helped me find Meera. She is my best friend in school today and I know we would be friends for years to come
