Mother Nature nurtures all livings organisms equally. It gives us air, water and food. However, out of all living organisms, human race is the one which has been exploiting nature. We humans consider ourselves worthy of everything that Nature provides us in raw form.
We cleared large patches of forests, harvested raw minerals, build houses and skyscrapers and established city’s sparkling with neon lights. But in this never ending process, we forgot to pay back Nature. As a result, we have polluted cities with no pastures, poisonous air, dirty water and adulterated food.
Therefore, now is the time to think about Mother Nature and payback. Now is the time to make our city green but how to make the cities green is the question. Well, the answer requires a lot of introspection, strategy making and planning processes.
Greenery has been the foundation of our existence. It not only makes the environment beautiful but also keeps it balanced. However, unfortunately, the green environment is slowly getting disrupted. The kind of treatment Nature is getting from us is that of betrayal and hypocrisy.
We human beings have become so selfish and consider ourselves so strong due to technological advancements that we have started misusing Nature which is destroying the greenery. The reduction of greenery around us symbolizes the level of harm we are posing to Nature and to our own self.
The universe has its own design for us. The design of recreation, the design of natural resources, the design of the plants and animals, the design of the different kind of seasons and the design of nurturing us through air, water and soil. We ought to follow the design as we are the parts of the whole which is environment. Harming the part automatically means a harm to the whole.
There is a famous poem by an Afro-American Poet, Allen Ginsberg. The poem is titled as A Supermarket in California. The poem delineates the destruction of Nature through the phenomenon of materialism, cosmopolitanism and modernization.
The poem is an apt in order to understand the need for greenery in the universe. In order to head forward in the path of development, we are compromising on the grounds of natural resources. That is why; Nature is gradually retaliating in the form of natural disasters, global warming and imbalance in temperatures. Nature is taking a stand for herself by punishing us.
That is why; there is a need to think about the ways and means to again spread greenery around us. Else, the world would soon end and all the phases of modernization and technology will not be able to help us and will not come to our rescue.
The tussle between Nature and Culture must be equalized. Instead of finding new technological ways of existence, we must bring back the aesthetic essence of the universe which is greenery. Only then can we expect a kind of balance in the universe.
Science should be used to grow more plants and trees so that the drive towards making this place a better one to live is enhanced in the best possible manner. The process of deforestation should be curtailed through passing strict orders not to hamper the natural beauty of our environment.
Earlier, movements like chipko movement under the leadership of Sundar Lal Bahuguna took place in order to prevent cutting of trees. Such movements should be held again in order to stop such activities. The green city drive can implemented by asking each and every resident of the respective city to plant saplings and plants in order to generate fresh air.
Pollution is again one of the major reasons as to why; plants and trees are getting destroyed. Too much of chemicals in the air hampers the growth of trees.
In order to stop this from happening, the various kinds of industries, commercial spots and all such places which are responsible for polluting the air and the surroundings must be warned not to do so. Strict actions must be taken against the people who do not follow the set norms.
Greening the city also means that we are not supposed to indulge in such activity which hampers the environment in any manner. In other words, the act of turning eco friendly is a huge contribution in making the city turn green. For example, the registers that students tend to use should not be completely made from the trees.
Non biodegradable wastes must not be dumped in the soil as the trees and plants are affected by it. In order to protect our green environment, we ought to consider it a part of our own and must be emotional while handling it. Nature is living as we ourselves are.
That is why; it has to be treated with utmost care and concern. It is our sole responsibility to look after our Mother Earth. Earth is the only planet which sustains life. It sustains life because it has greenery in it. Absence of greenery will automatically mean absence of life.
Due to industrialization and modernization, we are heading to our own doom. These two phenomenons are not bad for us. But, these are being developed at the cost of destroying the Nature. This is making the situation worse. A balance between the two will be helpful in going away with the environmental degradation and imbalance.
Therefore, green city drive is highly advisable. It can also comprise various informed intellectuals who can sit together and think about the methods which can be incorporated in the drive to make kit a better one. Eco criticism is a branch of literary studies which can be really helpful in this drive.
This theory considers Nature as living and includes academic discussions, debates and thoughts which should be read with utmost precision and should be understood well. It will bring us closer to Nature and thereby making us aware of the other repercussions of harming Nature.
If we wish to increase our life expectancy, the only way is to purify the environment around us. It can only be done by being sensitive towards the greenery around us. Oxygen levels have depleted due to the sole reason of reduction in plants. It is through the process of photosynthesis that we breathe in oxygen and remain healthy.
The various kind of health issues and unavailability of fresh air is choking us day by day. It is high time to open our eyes and work for the betterment of Nature, for ourselves and for our whole society. The contemporary imbalance in Nature is enough to act as a wake up call.
