Importance of Dussehra
In the northern part of India, Dussehra signifies the defeat of the demon king Ravan at the hands of Lord Rama. Ravan had kidnapped Lord Rama’s wife Sita and held her captive in Lanka. She was rescued by Lord Rama with the help of his brother Lord Lakshman and a troop of monkeys (including Lord Hanuman). During Dasara celebrations, the effigy of Ravan is burnt across the country. Several cultural programmes are also held where the Ram Leela is enacted on stage.
In the eastern parts of the country, Durga Puja is celebrated on this day to glorify the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. The Sindoor Khela is a prominent event on this day. Married women apply vermilion on their foreheads to bid farewell to the idols of goddesses that are taken away for immersion in water bodies.
In the southern part of India, Dasara is also referred to as Vijayadashami. On this day, young children are initiated into the world of learning through the process of Vidyarambham. Children write the letters of the regional language on a tray of rice or sand under the supervision of a respected elder. The function is held in schools, temples, and churches. Celebrations for Dasara in Mysore run for 10 days, starting from the beginning of Navratri and culminating in a grand parade on the tenth day.
